UPDATE: Russian watchdog bans US corn supplies from Feb 15

MOSCOW, Feb 10 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight Service will impose temporarily restrictions on imports of corn and soy beans from the U.S. starting from February 15, Alexei Alekseyenko, an aide to the service’s director told PRIME on Wednesday.
Earlier, the service said it detected infection in corn delivered from the U.S.
“We do not prohibit anything, only introduce temporary restrictions on supplies because we could not reach an agreement with the American side during the phone negotiations held yesterday regarding provision of the safety of the supplied products,” Alekseyenko said.
The watchdog said in a statement earlier in the day that it does not rule out a prohibition on imports of U.S. plants because that country has not taken measures to bar supplies of damaged products.
“Taking into account the gravity of the situation and the absence of effective measures by the American side, the service reserves the right to introduce restrictive measures for imports of dangerous American plant products,” the watchdog said in the statement.
